So my favourite moment throughout this past election night was the look of misery on the face of Nick Clegg as he lost his Sheffield Hallam to Labour, ha fucking ha Nick, it serves you right for betraying those voters who thought the Lib Dems were the most progressive choice on the ballot paper back in 2010 only then to watch you in the aftermath lead Lib Dems into coalition government with the Tories & help reek misery upon many vulnerable peeps.
Nick Clegg lost his seat & the current Lib Dem leader nearly lost his, though overall the Lib Dems did increase their number of parliamentary seats, the likes of Jo Swinson & Vince Cable regained the seats they lost back in 2015, however the Lib Dems have only increased the number of parliamentary seats to the level the then Liberal Party had back in the 1970s, yep the great Liberal Democrat fightback didn’t quite materialise on Thursday did it.
A Liberal Democrat activist told me yesterday in no uncertain terms to fuck off, hey not my fault the electorate told you to fuck off back into political obscurity & screw up your plans to slowly but surely replace Labour as the official opposition, yeah you can now definitely dream on about replacing Labour as the official opposition, however considering the makeup of the new parliament it would be unfair to say the Lib Dems are political insignificant. I’ll certainly be interested to see how many votes in parliament that are very tight where the Lib Dems will be prepared to prop up the Tories, yeah I still don’t trust the Lib Dems, in fact I never fucking will, they’ve proven themselves forever traitors to the progressive & radical tradition.
What was supposed to be the killer policy proposal this general election just gone which was going to catapult the Lib Dems back to 20 plus parliamentary seats & back to being way more politically significant, wasn’t it 1% on all rates of income tax, err how fucking boring! Whatever to the Liberal Party which spoke about electoral reform, legalising drugs & other radical ideas which the other two major parties weren’t prepared to talk about? Seems to me ever since the Orange Book, the sandal wearers who were prepared to think radical in the left-libertarian were shown the door & replaced with corporate suits who’ll say any shite that they reckon will get those votes from middle class peeps who can’t quite bring themselves to admit they’re Tories.
I very much come from the left-libertarian political tradition & so its crucifying seeing how boresome the Lib Dems have become, sure the Green Party have sort of taken over in espousing the kind of left-libertarian radicalism the old Liberal Party use to, oh & if any party should feel robbed GE2017 it should be the Green Party not the Liberal Democrats.
