I know some peeps will ask where have you been grandma as I’ve only now gotten round to write about what happened at Chicago Pride last weekend & considering there’s already been a ton written in the news about what occurred last weekend at Chicago Pride, yeah well I’ve been feeling too ill to write anything lengthy over the past few days & being as I’m a lesbian trans women who’s also of Jewish heritage I kind of think its more then my place to comment upon Jewish LGBTQ peeps being discriminated against no matter where I’m made aware of it happening.
With this blog I don’t tend to cover political stories which occur in the United States, but Antisemitism is a universal problem around the globe & what happened at the Dyke March which is part of Chicago’s LGBTQ Pride celebrations, well it smacks of fucking Antisemitism alright, what else do you call it when a group of Jewish lesbians were ejected from the march for displaying the Jewish Pride flag.
Err what the fuck?!?! How can anybody feel unsafe or threatened by a Jewish Pride flag?!?!?
Oh the Jewish Pride flag is a sign of Zionism is it now?!?! So if a Muslim LGBTQ group displayed a Muslim Pride flag would that mean they automatically support Islamist terrorism, err I think not & if anybody made out it was they’re a fucking Islamophobic moron, well the Star Of David just because it’s on the Israeli flag isn’t a symbol of Zionism, it’s the symbol of Judaism, it’s the symbol of the Jewish peeps.
Just because you’re Jewish does not mean you’re automatically a supporter of Israel & the persecution of the Palestinian peeps by the Israeli state, in fact just about every Jew I know LGBTQ or not opposes the apartheid regime the Israeli government is operating against the Palestinians, to suggest all Jews are rabid supporters of Israel & political Zionism is in my mind racist & Antisemitic.
Just because so far with this blog I’ve not been fiercely critical of Israel does not mean I’m somehow any supporter of Israel or that I don’t care about the plight of the Palestinian peeps, there are just more immediate issues I’m better place to write about & this includes the discrimination of Jewish LGBTQ peeps which I’m of course one.
Being Jewish doesn’t necessarily mean you’re in regular attendance at your local synagogue or in fact you ever see the inside of any synagogue, being Jewish doesn’t mean you’ve been brought up practicing Judaism, I mean I’m as atheistic as they come but I do identify myself as part of the Jewish diaspora & nor am I alone in doing so, because though Jewish heritage has something to do with what was set down in the Torah, being Jewish is more then Judaism, it’s a shared history & values etc & this why I say the Star Of David is not just the symbol of Judaism but for many Jewish peeps the symbol of Jewishness, the reason I’m saying all this & stressing this is to answer the argument that it would best for all banners with religious symbols to be banned from being paraded in any Pride march.
The militant atheist in me definitely sympathises with the argument it would be best to prohibit all banners/flags etc with religious symbols displayed on them at Pride parades, particularly considering that for centuries organised religion has persecuted LGBTQ peeps & many organised religions still do so often with fatal consequences, however I’m no fool & recognised though I might be an atheist that many LGBTQ aren’t & they find salvation in whatever religious beliefs they have & are still proudly LGBTQ as I’m, I certainly don’t want to discourage organised religions from embracing LGBTQ peeps positively for being LGBTQ, thus I think it’s a positive thing to have LGBTQ religious groups involved in Pride marches to promote greater religious acceptance of LGBTQ peeps.
I hope there won’t be any repetition of what happened at Chicago Pride next week at Pride in London, I hope there’s never any repetition of what happened at Chicago Pride at any Pride celebration.
